BETHEL ISLAND, Contra Costa County — October 28, 2026. A road drainage repair on Piper Road north of Gateway Road remains on Contra Costa County’s list of construction projects, despite an earlier announcement that anticipated finishing by September 30. The county’s October 26 projects dashboard continues to label the Piper Road Sinkhole and Culvert Repair project as “In Construction.”
Where is the work?
The county’s August traffic notice places the work approximately 500 feet north of the Piper Road–Gateway Road intersection on Bethel Island. It originally scheduled a start on August 31 and a completion target of September 30, subject to weather and unforeseen conditions. That earlier completion date must not be treated as proof of completion, because the county’s more recent project inventory has not marked the project completed.
Why is the culvert being replaced?
Storms during December 2022 and January 2023 damaged an arched metal culvert beneath Piper Road, contributing to a sinkhole and deterioration of the roadway area. The project calls for replacing the older corrugated metal pipe with a 54-inch reinforced-concrete pipe, reconstructing disturbed pavement, adding drainage and rock protection, and restriping the repaired section.
The county’s project page identifies Kerex Engineering Inc. as the contractor and lists an original construction cost estimate of $282,000. That is an estimate, not the same thing as a final paid contract amount. The county’s bid results list a Kerex bid of $344,400; the figures describe different stages and should not be conflated.
Is the road closed?
The original Public Works notice warned of traffic delays of up to 10 minutes during weekday construction, with work scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It does not establish a continuing full road closure as of October 28. Drivers should obey current signs on Piper Road and not assume that the original timetable or traffic restrictions are still unchanged.
Where to verify the latest status
The county lists resident engineer Eric Sanders, (925) 595-5992, for construction information. Residents can review the official Piper Road project page and the county’s current public works project inventory. The earlier August 28 traffic notice explains the initial schedule.
Editorial verification: As of October 28, the October 26 county dashboard says “In Construction”; California58 has not confirmed a revised completion date or independently inspected the site. The location and history are reported from government project records, not speculation about the cause of any schedule change.
